What makes a horse lover?  Is it the strength combined with the grace, so rarely combined in such elegance in nature?  Is it the power of controlling such an awesome beast?  Is it the loving nature of many horse breeds and their loyalty to their owner?  Is it we all watched movies as we grew up that featured unbelievable mounts likeThe Black Stallion, or Silver (that goes a long way back to “The Lone Ranger”!), Black Beauty or Flicka?   Or was it the thundering of hooves at a horse race that echoes in our hearts long after those awesome creatures sped by?

Whatever it is, when it’s there, the love of various breeds of horses is a powerful emotion.  When I came to the time in my life where I could own one, I considered many breeds of horses, looking for the one that would satisfy my personality and particular needs.

I had a love of three colors - all black, all white or palomino.  But these colors come in many of the various breeds of horses, like Thoroughbreds, Arabians, the American Standardbred and American Saddle Horse, as well as the Missouri Fox Trotter and Morgan.  Those were all American breeds.  I decided it would be best to limit my search to American breeds, just by assuming that they were more readily available and less expensive.  After all, I was going to need an aluminum horse trailer, electric fencing, not to mention a western saddle, certainly used, and all the western horse tack - just to name some things.

So I studied temperaments of the various American horse breeds.  The American Saddle Horse is bred primarily for show and the Standardbred for racing.  So I didn’t think either of those breeds were what I was looking for.  I really wanted a pet.  I was intrigued by the American Quarter Horse.  It’s the most popular breed in the US, developed by the early English colonists.  It got its name for the quarter-mile sprints for which it was so adept.   It came to be used as a cow pony as it seemed to have a remarkable instinct for herding and cutting out cattle.  It’s attractive, compact, and is known for its kind disposition.  I found an American Quarter mare, palomino (they’re golden-coated with creamy mane and tail) for sale not too far from where I live and went to see her.  Her name is Buttercup, and she’s now my “dream-come-true”.
